As we are remembering Cancer worldwide today, we want to take this opportunity to seek for what support ans care nurses are giving to cancer patients in and out of the clinical settings.
As nurses we have a huge role to play in the life of any cancer patient around us be it an ongoing case, a survivor and or the family of a cancer patient.
In an oncology ward, one notice that it is always on of the most morale draining wards to work in various hospital. sometime you wonder if it is as a result of patients condition or self pity or lack of motivation towards continuing with life.
Nurses who work in such a ward may at some point feel the need to support patients , but the question remains how do we achieve making a cancer patient feel better especially those who already know the path they are to follow.
A nurse must ensure to be a counseling expert with empathy before accepting to work in an oncology ward. in the cases of newly diagnosed cancer patients, nurses who work closely with such a patient must ensure to compete with the patient's feeling of dejection and sure to win, this is because nutritional pattern, clothing, exposure and activities of a cancer patient changes automatically, hence requires the patient to come to term with the diagnosis and commence immediate adjustments to life.
in most developing countries though not infectious, cancer patients are still stigmatized in various forms requiring a nurse working in this setting to the patient on what to come when the diagnosis is made known to the public or relatives. Though in most cases patients prefer to conceal this condition until it is evident.
A nurse must also give all supposed care to the patient care to a cancer patient like every other patient but must in this case ensure a soothing environment and as well let patient be involved in their own care.
We remember cancer today , hence the support nurses can give to individuals suffering from it is advocate for cancer patients through various channels such as in hospitals where we work, in other work places, in the media, social media and personal supports.
As a profession, nursing can develop a research work into cancer care towards identifying the best care approach for cancer patient in and out of the clinical settings. This week should hold a series of webinars, seminars, conferences, outreaches, and other events to promote cancer care and encourage innovative approaches towards achieving optimum level of care for cancer patients.
