Global Action in Nursing:Midwifery Mentor Job Description
Starting Date: September 1st, 2018

The Global Action in Nursing (GAIN) project is a 12-month opportunity based in Neno district, Malawi. The purpose of the mentorship is to work closely with Malawian nurse colleagues to improve outcomes in maternal child health. The GAIN nurse mentor provides support, clinical care, administrative guidance, and educational opportunities to Malawian nurses who provide obstetrical and newborn care. In addition, the GAIN mentor will collect and provide data to the GAIN evaluation officer based at UCSF and act as liaison to the UCSF and local Partners in Health (PIH) teams. The GAIN mentor should be prepared to deliver effective midwifery care in low resource settings and have a deep commitment to equity and justice.

GAIN nurse mentors will spend one year in Malawi at PIH sites in Neno District. GAIN nurse mentors will provide mentorship to nurse colleagues and other health care professionals as well as support clinical care systems aimed at improving maternal/child health. Ongoing guidance will be provided to GAIN midwifery mentors by UCSF School of Nursing faculty.

Major Duties
  • Manages antepartum, labor and delivery, and postpartum care.
  • Provides teaching, counseling and support to obstetrical clients in accordance with established clinical practice agreements and in close collaboration with other health professionals.
  • Works collaboratively with other health professionals in management of selected complex medical problems in pregnancy, using consultation and referral as appropriate.
  • Provides leadership in comprehensive nursing, preventative, and therapeutic health care service to patients and family members, in a variety of settings from community based primary care facilities to district hospital settings.
  • Develops, implements, and trains nurse clinicians in courses that prepare them to ensure safe maternal and neonatal outcomes.
  • Works collaboratively with Malawian health professionals modeling interprofessional clinical care provision.
  • Partners with Malawian nurses to provide direct patient care in the labor and delivery and postpartum wards.
  • Collaborates with the UCSF and Malawian leadership teams to implement educational and clinical improvement programs.
  • Directs didactic and clinical training in various applicable subjects such as management of common health conditions in women and children, leadership development, and quality improvement to Malawian nursing staff.
  • Participates as part of a team on program monitoring and evaluation, including data collection and close collaboration with the local PIH monitoring and evaluation team.
  • Provides logistical support for visiting collaborators and local recognition and ceremonial events.

Minimum qualifications
  • Two years of full-time experience as a midwife
  • Minimum academic education at bachelor’s level (registered nurse midwife with bachelor’s degree minimum)
  • Active Registered Nurse licensure and willingness to complete nursing registration in Malawi
  • Commitment to values of health equity and collaboration
  • Experience working with diverse populations either locally or globally
  • Certification by the American College of Nurse Midwifery for US-based midwives or the Nurses and Midwives Council of Malawi or International Council of Midwifery if outside Malawi.
