Mindfulness and Self-Care in Midwifery- GANM Webinar

Join a Global Alliance for Nursing and Midwifery webinar on Monday February 27th – 12:30 p.m. EST USA for a brief review of the literature on stress and coping in midwifery, followed by a mindfulness practice led by Erin Wright, DNP, CNM, APHN-BC, an instructor at Johns Hopkins School of Nursing, Certified Nurse-Midwife, and board certified Advanced Practice Holistic Health Nurse.

Stress and coping challenges are well-known among midwives and in the midwifery literature.  Long hours, few breaks, a harsh medico-legal environment along with occasional adverse outcomes can create a high stress work environment for midwives.  Attrition among midwives and midwifery students due to stress is common as well.  To mitigate this stress, it is important for midwives and midwifery organizations to consider both individual and institutional methods of self-care.  The practice of mindfulness has been shown to be a very effective individual method for improving midwife coping and decreasing stress.

Erin Wright is passionate about helping students understand and develop excellence in midwifery and nursing in women’s health. She is a Certified Nurse-Midwife and a board-certified Advanced Practice Holistic Nurse. Dr. Wright provides clinical care to patients in Baltimore City. Her clinical areas of expertise include mind-body medicine, Centering Pregnancy, labor support, breastfeeding, adolescent pregnancy, and non-pharmacologic pain relief in labor. Her current research focuses on occupational health concerns for midwives and the use of  integrative medicine for stress reduction. She is a past president and vice president of the Maryland Affiliate of the American College of Nurse- Midwives (ACNM). She currently serves the organization as a legislative chair and often testifies before the state legislature regarding scope of practice issues for midwives. Nationally, she serves ACNM as a member of the Ethics Committee. She holds a BSN from Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing, a MS in Midwifery from Georgetown University and a DNP from Frontier Nursing University.
