Nurses play significant role in effective prevention and management of NCD-ICN

Dr Frances Hughes, Chief Executive Officer of the International Council of Nurses (ICN) , represented nursing at the Stakeholder Forum - First WHO Global Meeting of National NCD Programme Managers and Directors organised by the WHO Global Coordination Mechanism on non - communicable diseases (NCDs) on 16 - 17 February 2016. 

At the meeting, Dr Hughes presented examples of primary health care (PHC) models from different regions in which nurses play a significant role in effective prevention and management of NCDs. Examples presented included advanced practice nurses leading nurse - led models of care; the use of eHealth to deliver NCD care; nurse - run community health assessments to detect cardiovascular disease ; and frontline nurses integrating mental health care into PHC.
