New book: "Telemedicine - challenges and practices

A new book has been published, giving an overall outlook on the use and perspectives of telemedicine and documenting how telemedicine works.

The book is authored by Pierre Simon, nephrologist and pioneer of teledialysis in France and also president of the French Society of Telemedicine from 2010 until 2015.

New medical practices are possible today due to communication technology and this can help to resolve the problem of distance and health care. What are these practices? What are their purposes? What do they offer to the patient, the health workers and to public health? Will they be part of daily life for professionals and people in the future?

This well documented book gives a good outline regarding these questions. The author explains what telemedicine is and clarifies its definition. He explains how doctors in France and in other countries have developed these practices. He gives different examples of its use in France. He shows how telemedicine can improve access to health care, encourage patient independence and how it can help to look after patients suffering from chronic illnesses. He gives detailed information on how to develop the project. Finally, he outlines a description of different practices that have been developed in several specialties and completes it with a selection of scientific articles.
